17 every year, is celebrated as the anniversary of the first manned powered flight. The Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, were two American aviators, who are generally credited for flying the world’s first controlled, powered, heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17, 1903, successfully. Few seconds of manned flight changed the way people traveled.
Presently most commercial aircraft fly at speeds less than Mach I, using aviation turbine fuel (ATF). As the cost of fossil fuel is skyrocketing, aviation innovators are experimenting with Biofuel and or the ultimate solution aircraft, powered by the high-grade batteries. By the next decade, we may have short-haul commercial hybrid-electric aircraft in the world. The main problem presently is the batteries and their power-weight ratio.
“Solar Impulse” the first fully solar-powered airplane, has already made history after completing the round-the-world trip in July 2016. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hI4VQux3qIo
“Aviation is proof that given, the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible”
Another innovation in the aviation industry was Drone, very soon we may have a new ‘Urban Air Mobility‘ system. https://youtu.be/i3i4BBJjzw4
In the near future, we may see Electric or hybrid electric air mobility system in the skies. They will be much quieter, costing less, easy to maintain and operate. This will lead to a reduction in overall cost of airlines operation and friendly to the environment. The overall cost to the nation will also reduce, as the future air mobility system might operate out of rooftops, beaches, stadiums or any vacant place.
Advancements in the field of E-commerce, cyber tech, biometrics, blockchain tech, artificial intelligence, robotics, baggage & passenger handling, translation tech, and the most important Solar energy, will help the aviation industry.
The solar-powered airports are the new buzzword. Kochi airport is the world’s first to be fully solar powered. It has awarded “Champions of Earth” by United nations recently and the first airport in the world to get an environmental award. https://www.indiatoday.in/…/un-honours-solar-powered-kochi-….
Other airports utilizing solar energy are Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, and Kishangarh. Once implemented the changes will also help in reducing the effects of Climate change, reducing carbon footprints and thereby helping the Environment.
Wright brothers, the aviation pioneers couldn’t have imagined these quantum innovations in the aviation industry, 115 years back.
